My cousin Jenna nearly killed me by roping me into the AFC half marathon in Aug. I really should have trained for it, but I didn't. Since the half I have been a bit more motivated to be more consistent with my running, but I am having trouble pushing myself over the 35-40 min hump.
There are humps you have to overcome in running. If you can make it to running one mile straight, then three miles is an easy next hump to overcome. After three the six mile hump is next. If you can do six, then ten is easy...etc. For me, if I can push through the 35 min mark, than 50 mins becomes my norm. I am a slow plodder, so I don't cover very much mileage in that 50 mins, but I really feel like I get a good work out in.
I have also been stretching. My neck and shoulders get so tight from sitting at the computer. Stretching seems to help. It is hard to be diligent at stretching so I signed up for a free trial session at yogaglo.com. The session was Ok, but wasn't for me...too New Ageish. I'll just stick to stretching on my own.
I have also been trying to do calisthenics in my backyard after my run. Nothing major, just 5 mins or so of squats, lunges, push ups and the like. I have a long way to go.
Reminders to myself:
Consistency is the key
Push yourself just a bit further than you thought was possible
Take the time to stretch...get off the couch during commercials and stretch!
Hydrate with water...not caffeine
Do not eat half your sister's birthday cake and then expect your thighs NOT to rub together

I just got over a new hump today! 2 miles!
Yes. I have not run for a while, but I did experience what you wrote when I did.
